Compassion, understanding and boundaries are the heart of therapy, the heart of life; personal, lived dialogue between philosophy, theory and practice: existential therapy. CPD available.
Some things I have learned since training, or: my existential journey so far.
In the twenty five years since graduating from my training at NSPC, Existential Therapy has accompanied me in a personal, lived dialogue between philosophy, theory and practice. Twelve years ago, feeling at a loss when confronted with severe responses to trauma, I trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Systemic Constellations. In the last few years, after a dreaming that ‘compassion, understanding and boundaries are the heart of therapy, the heart of life’ I began to reflect upon these concepts and also on the way I integrate my different trainings within an overarching existential worldview, in my life and in my work. This talk will be based on the book which gradually emerged out of these reflections.
Laura Barnett is an existential psychotherapist registered in the United Kingdom (UKCP, MBACP Sen.accred) and in Europe (EAP). She now works privately in Lewes, after 20 years in an NHS hospital, where she ran two specialised psychotherapy services - for cancer patients and their carers, and for post-Intensive Care patients.
Her new book, The Heart of Therapy, developing compassion, understanding and boundaries (Routledge 2023) develops, with the help of many vignettes and in an accessible style, her personal perspective on Existential Therapy as an integrating therapeutic approach.
